World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.

The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single “sudden death” games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Official website:

  1. This match surprised me. That old saying, "May the best man win" comes to mind. Is it really so?

  2. Pragg is such a brilliant player my fav from the younger indian bunch that came through.

  3. Pragg rating is climbing into mid 27s. The best man won again.

  4. Pragg, Indias #1 player is one of the great stars of the future. I see Vincent Kaymer and Daniil Dubov as two of his main rivals.

  5. Someone ask Kramnik what are the chances of Prag winning against Ding in the same tournament, same round, same color

  6. Legends say that when the first ever chess match happened in the B4 era, after White went 1. e4, a faint voice from the future was heard saying:

"It is as of move 1 that we have a completely new game"

  7. Something tells me the next world champion title match will be resolved in classical section, and very quickly.

  8. so called "World champion" is losing in a poor way 🙂

  9. I believe if Prag becomes world champion, then Magnus may be motivated to play the world cup again.

  10. Did someone say Déjà vu?? 👂

  11. When the pandemic ended, i stopped frequenting this channel. But im proud to say that i was an early Pragg bandwagoner and its great to see my hopes and suspicions about him(as well as Sarin) come true. Hes a formidable, champion level player.

  12. Why Pragg win with black pieces is special— White on average beats Black in 55 percent of them (Elo ratings of 2100 or above), but for elite players (Elo ratings of 2700 or above), the winning percentage is 64 percent.
