elo needs to degrade. chess needs to modernize AGAIN
This video's clickbait was the one that made me unsubscribe.
I like the idea the US Chess Federation suggests at the bottom – FIDE events must "be registered at least 30 days in advance of their start date." That's still relatively short notice but also enough time that you can at least somewhat plan around it.
Clickbait title yes, but this is an aspect I didn't know anything about (because I only started watching chess videos at all in the last few months), and I can't wait to see what develops. Do YOU think the mini tourney will count?
All the more reason why Magnus doesn't participate in all these candidates brouhaha ❤❤❤😂😢😢😮😅😊
Respect from Ukraine to call things their names 👏

FIDE should replace the rating and circuit with Grand Prix tournaments, in addition to the World Cup and Grand Swiss.
I understand how the circuit provides more opportunity for more players around the world. If it is to be done, it should be a set calendar of events which are pre-approved 6 months ahead.
"It's just….questionable."
That's saying it mildly. Call it what it is: It's a fixed tournament.
They shouldn’t last minute change the rules as well. If FIDE is allowed to do that, you might as well are allowed to make your own tournaments on the fly to match new rules.
Ding Loren will win next WC title. Due to AI and embedded microwave transmitter. IMO.
All the players trying to qualify by rating should play each other on a "pre-candidates" type of tournament to really fight for that rating. That would even be exciting to watch!
alireza firouzja race to candidates tournament is wild 😅😅🤣🤣😅😅
Make it simple – let them play for candidate spot
I think we're being too hard on this FIDE guy, seeing as chess is such a new indie game.
We need Kasparov and his PCA back.
This shows that chess players are just some nerd dudes
This reminds me alotttt of the way jiujitsu is governed
The Chennai tournament is still fine as the participants were all close to each other. But, this Alireza tournament is not at all acceptable. How are those grandmasters gonna win against him! There's a huge rating gap😂
I guess it's time to start a tournament called "Levy's elo farm to get to 2500"
change the rule
Previous cycle had better rules. Spot in candidates given by rating was calculated from longer period, not just from one rating list. That's why there were no such strange races at the end.
I thought it was "collapsing".
Is this like the world championship equivalent of bribing some dude to throw to achieve your GM norms?
Firouzja is just farming an otb tournament 💀
Why can't we just make a chess calender fixed for an year and any other tournaments planned during that year will be unrated………?
This is the same World Chess Organization that destroyed Fischer. Let us remind ourselves. Fischer played a private chess match with Spassky at St. Stefanun and in Belgrade. Because of the arrogant powers of the World Chess Organization, he ended up in prison.😎
So Ding manipulated the rules and is now world champion so everyone is giving it ago. I hope this is not a surprise. 🤔
It seems like part of the problem that the formula for Elo is imperfect.
People talk a lot about "farming" much lower rated players. Intuitively it seems like the point of Elo should make this a non-issue, right? I mean, the lower rated an opponent is, the less points you get for beating them, and the more points you lose for losing or drawing them. So the whole idea is that this should accurately account for your rating difference.
In practice it isn't quite that simple.
To explain the problem, suppose that there are three chess players: A, B, and C.
In expectation, suppose A will score about 10-1 against B,
and B will score 10-1 against C.
Elo then ASSUMES that player A will score 100-1 against player C, but there's no reason that this is necessarily true. Suppose instead that the gap in skill is so significant that player A, in practice, would actually score 1000-1 against player C.
While this seems like a perfectly feasible scenario, there is now no set of 3 Elo ratings that accurately describes these three win rates. According to the Elo formula, a 10-1 score dictates a 400 point difference, so:
Player A should be 400 points above player B.
Player B should be 400 points above player C.
And Player A should be 1200 points above player C.
So which is it? is player A 800 points or 1200 points above player C?
Well it depends who plays each other more often.
If players A and C predominantly play against player B, instead of against each other, then they will end up only slightly more than 800 Elo points apart, since each will end up 400 points from player B.
If players A and C predominantly play against each other, instead of against player B, they will instead end up almost 1200 Elo points apart, with player B somewhere in the middle.
In the second scenario, player A is becoming higher rated simply by choosing to play worse opposition. This is "farming".
Of course, we could conversely suppose that player A scores only 50-1 against player C, in which case we would observe the opposite effect, where player A should actively avoid playing weaker players if they want to maximize their rating. I'm no expert, but empirically it sounds like this is a less common dynamic in chess. That said, I don't see a reason it couldn't be with some other game, or even with chess at a significantly lower level, where the outcome is less likely to be decided by superior positional understanding and more likely to be decided by a serious blunder.
Elo will always create some sort of incentive like this unless its assumption that you can predictively multiply the win rates of different matchups (e.g. 10:1 * 10:1 -> 100:1) happens to be correct. And it sounds like in practice it might be incorrect in a predictable direction.
It sounds like Alireza is doing something different by selectively playing older players, who are more likely to be overrated, but honestly I just wanted to type this out somewhere.
.😮😮😮😮
Levy never fails to explain the circuit board thing
Here I thought FIFA was crazy, FIDE made FIFA looks like a proper sport organization😂
fantastic video. cheating at the highest level.
It's strange to see you voluntarily entering into one of the biggest, if not the biggest drama that will become apparent shortly. Just stay happy and do what you do best, bro. If you agree…
#peace!
Magnus again showing us why he does not participate in this circus
GothamChess : Let me discuss (disgust)
Me : Yes, you disgusting
Nepo should had been the world champion last year because the world champion withdrew but for chinese money and audience fide helped ding become a world champion. Historically if the champion withdraws the winner of candidates is made the world champion automatically
magnus won't play again?
Lower rated, mostly retired, grandmasters being farmed for rating willingly, seriously calls into question the integrity of the game.
Magnus was just fined integrity issues.
Fide should discount those games.
Levy never fails to stare into my soul at the starting of the video
That c2 podcast meme is hilarious
When you finally understand 'the game' (chess), now you get blown away trying to understand 'the game behind the game' 😂😂 luckily it's a bunch of genious chess players who are having to figure this out and not me!!
If we had to organize a tournent to help gukesh we wouldnt be inviting levon, parham, giri, so, etc
It was announced on vishy's birthday and was a really big deal to us…😢
My understanding was Chennai Open was announced in October.
Alireza and wesley should play to settle this
What if FIDE rated the Firouza event at the last momemt that prevents and/or deprives time for Wesley So to organize a similiar Wesley So tournament? Then this is obviously unethical and unfair at the very least.
Chess Drive to Survive, premieres 2024
Wesley should qualify
What
It's time for Fabiano Caruana to win the Worlds
This will not be posible next year becose there will be 2 spots for fide circuit. This sad the CEO of fide in interview for chessbase india.
