I think it’s 367 better than regular chess though
Honestly my main gripes against Chess and why I think it's a BAD design for a game are:
– It's asymmetric, thus making both sides play differently and giving one person an advantage.
– The board is evenly numbered, which leads to the aforementioned asymmetry.
– The early game is bland and boring, with limited options; and the end-game is equally as such given that it's mostly just a "clean-up phase" of inevitability.
Which is where Shogi comes in; the board is 9×9 and perfectly symmetrical, the "middle game" lasts for most of the game as you can capture opponents' pieces and redeploy them as "Mercenaries", keeping the game engaging and fun for longer. And the promotion zone is bigger, allowing for easier promotion.
That Queen+King loss to win concept reminds me of the Drunken Elephant piece in an ancient Shogi variant, where there is a piece called the "Drunken Elephant" (go figure) that is in front of the King, who does what you'd expect a debauching individual would do… UNTIL it gets promoted on the other side of the board into the "Crown Prince" and then acts as a second King (both Kings have to then be taken for the opponent to win.)
I think the banana should drop on death, so the king getting a capture means it gets the banana back
