8:05 I think the brilliancy there was that the bishop sees g7 at 8:56. If it wasn't on b2, then Re8 could be met by …Nc7, Qxf7 Kh8, since Qxg7 mate is only possible because the bishop is on b2.
I am a long time physical board player who just started playing online in the last week. I usually play good with no blunders and few mistakes. I was wondering why I never get brilliant moves and this explains it really well.

it's pretty simple. If a move is a sacrifice but also the best move in the position it is counted as a brilliant move. Doesn't necessarily matter if its not the only move.

I made a move with a bishop it was taking a pawn BUT if you took the bishop you would be mated at first it gave me brilliant move but after 10 seconds it gave me excellent I mean wtf I sacrificed a piece

I know why that last one was a brilliant move. It gives the knight a safe exit from the corner and also removes the threat on the passed pawn. That's better than hanging the exchange, really.

Sometimes In endgames when there are only pawns and rooks it will give a brilliant move for a random king move that was relatively obvious and then an accidental brilliancey for a pawn move -its like hmm seems like it would be more brilliant if I could find a move that wasn't brilliant 😂💁🏻♂️
I think great moves are pretty bad. Most of my great moves are delivering mate in one, or taking a free piece or queen. Getting a great move to setting up a hard to find fork, or the move right before a checkmate would be better great moves.

True. If you're up 10 (positionally & tactically) and sacrifice a passive rook, you're still up at least 6+ I'd imagine.
I'm 300 blitz rated and got my first brilliant move today. I blundered a rook, but stockfish said it was genius level rook sacrifice

there are some common sacrifices that are considered brilliant moves when they are very well known movements, For example some very well known traps in scotish gambit or evans gambit are considered brilliant, i prefer when a brilliant move was a better option than stockfish top choice. Good movements that are hard to see, should be just Great Moves.

I once got a brilliant for moving my queen one square away from where it was. I wasn’t sacrificing, attacking or threatening anything. Still no clue why it was brilliant
