Who is playing chess? Fide or Opportunists?
I think what should happen is since a world championship match is held every year, every month there should be a tournament that gets counted towards the candidates. FIDE decides those tournaments randomly every year and in order to be a tournament that counts towards the candidates, certain standards need to be followed.
Totally agree and think there should be a tournament calendar established for the entire year ahead and some heads up time for a newly developed tournament of like at least 3 months. This is ridiculous.

Chess is a game almost everyone loves and almost everybody doesn't care about it. Fide has been trying to get into the mainstream again ever since fishcer left the game and it leads to this weird situation. The internet has chess on a different level. Lets simplify the way to get to the candidates already and make it clear. Something about chess should be simple
This is by pushing in the weird angles of tournament rules that you make them understand the issues, and you can hope changes. After this weird list of events, let's just hope that it makes FIDE simplify the rules to qualify to any important event.
Someone could literally miss out on qualifying for the Candidates Tournament by not paying attention for a day. That's kinda stupid.
I don't mind a round robin Candidates, everything else is spot on.
The real issue is the current system allows weaker players like Vidit, Prag, and Abasov into the candidates but screw over some of the best players in the world like Firouzja, Giri, and So. I mean why does fourth place in a tournament get a spot over 3 of the top 10 players in the world😂

I get the fuss, but I don’t get how what Ding did is any different! The point is you are not eligible due to some criteria and then you orchestrate an event to become eligible! It does not matter what that criteria is!
Maybe if ding played those 30 games in legit tournaments like all the other players he would’ve lost some rating points and lost his spot, but you never know cause it is what it is!

FIDE has to put rules in place – Simple rule – Competitions which give FIDE rating must be approved by a certain date every year.

meanwhile the event is literally called "Alireza Firouzja's Race to Candidatess"
For something so straightforward, chess has a lot of shady things that happen. From anal beads and bathroomgate, to VERY questionable calls (Magnus' opponent making an illegal move, Magnus plays on, and the opponent calls the arbiter on Magnus..), to fishy tournaments. There's got to be a lot of money changing hands behind the scenes.
Simplest thing would be if Wesley So did the exact same thing, then FIDE decide not to rate either and Wesley still continues on to qualify. It'd be fair and equitable judgement that still favours Wesley. Shouldn't be on him to play an act in the circus, but if he does he has two measures of equal counterweight in place against Alireza's attempt.
It's pretty ironic that a game which requires insane levels of strategic thinking is managed in such a disorganized way.

I think the candidates is probably good for the sport because it brings attention and hype. But I think yes, tournaments which will count towards it must be announced way more ahead of time; maybe there should be a min average rating for a tournament to count (this might be difficult with the overall rating). Basically some way to stop this last second farming for rating points.
FIDE has never been a great organization, but it's definitely went downhill since Euwe was president. He genuinely cared about the game instead of politics.

How about if those who are battling for the tournament at around 50 elo points play their own knockout tournament with no chance of winning a prize?
